The vacationer’s paradise, the gamblers heaven, the foodie’s one stop destination for Portuguese food and much more is what Macau is known for. Yes! I am talking about the same Macau which is a stone’s throw distance from Hong Kong and can be reached by a ferry service from Hong Kong or simply catch a plane to Macau. However besides all these reasons to visit Macau, there are more different ones. Here are 3 of my favorites.

Ruins of St Paul’s

The historic ruins of St Paul’s is a world heritage site as noted by UNESCO and is a large area filled with ruins of a college called St Paul’s which was standing tall in the 16th century. This ruin area also has the “Mater Dei” or the Cathedral of St. Paul in it. It was known to be one of the largest cathedrals in whole of Asia in the 16th and 17th Centuries. You must go to see the stone carvings which are intricate and very well made. The church was believed to be made with white stones and has three halls which are very well decorated.

The admission is free of charge and you can take a city bus to reach here. The museum is open from 10 am to 8 pm every day except Tuesdays.

A-ma temple
The most historic place to visit in Macau is the A-Ma Temple. This temple is situated in the southeast of Macau and was built in 1488. The temple is of a goddess of the sea and is called Mazu. She is known to protect the fishermen of the land. The whole temple has architectural wonders in it and there are stone lions which guard the temple. My personal favorite when I visited this temple was the smell of hundreds of incense sticks to show your faith towards the goddess. The smell just gets at you and keeps you enchanted and makes you feel at peace.
