Chilarai of the Koch dynasty constructed the Kamakhya Temple in the year 1565 and one can easily see that they are constructed in the style of medieval period. This temple is a symbol of fusion of faith and practices. It has been seen that various people offer sacrifices at this temple. One should not know that female animals are not sacrificed at the temple except when the sacrifice takes place at a large scale.

It is true that one can visit the temple during anytime around the year but large numbers of tantric visits the temple during the annual festival called Ambubachi Mela. This festival is celebrated generally in the mid of month of June when monsoon season takes place. The festival is held to celebrate the annual menstrual cycle of the goddess of the temple, Devi Kamakhya.

Other name by which this festival is referred to is known as Ameti or Tantric Fertility Festival. The festival lasts for four long days and tantric from different parts of the country visit it.
